Thank you Payne H&S Club
Thank you Payne H&S Club for buying 106 ($2000) new, library bound, nonfiction books for the Payne Library! Some of the topics that they cover are science experiments, space, natural disasters, dinosaurs, animals, holiday cookbooks and origami, and biographies. The H&S Club is helping update the library’s nonfiction section that will support the new emphasis on reading nonfiction and doing research in the Common Core Standards. The books have been circulating for several weeks and the kids have been excited to check out new books and are enthusiastic about the textured feel and smell of the new library binding.
If you are interested in seeing details about the new books, go to the Payne webpage, http://payne-moreland-ca.schoolloop.com/, Our School tab. Scroll down to Library and click on the library catalog link, choose Payne Library and type in H&S and you will see the list of all the new books from the H&S Club.
Thank you again to the H&S Club for funding this project. And thank you to everyone that has contributed time and/or money to the H&S Club to make this project possible.
MEF Preschool Grant Books Circulating!
“The MEF Small Grant program is intended to provide the seed money to programs that enrich the educational experience for as many Moreland students as possible.”
Thank you MEF! Ninety-one new picture books have been funded and are starting to circulate thanks to a grant from the Moreland Educational Foundation. The new books from MEF are targeted for a younger audience, but will be enjoyed by kindergarten and first grade students as well as preschoolers. Mrs. Kahn along with Miss Susie, Miss Archana, Miss Gesmyne and Miss Sunae will be sharing the new books with students in the library as well as the classroom.
I’m the Best by Lucy Cousins is the story of Dog whose boasting makes his friends sad. Luckily by the end of the book Dog has learned how to be a good friend. Hugless Douglas by David Melling is the story of a young bear, looking for hugs in all the wrong places until he finally goes home and learns that the best hugs are from someone he loves. A Balloon for Isabel by Deborah Underwood is the story of two porcupines who desperately want some balloons. They are very clever problem-solvers and find a way to enjoy their balloons without popping them. Some other new titles are Seven Hungry Babies by Candace Fleming, The Perfect Gift by Mary Newell DePalma, Elmer and the Hippos by David McKee, Tiny Little Fly by Michael Rosen, Let’s Count Goats! By Mem Fox and My Heart Is Like a Zoo by Michael Hall.
Lost or Damaged Library Book… What Do I Do?
First of all, don’t panic, most lost library books turn up. Moreland School District does not charge overdue fines. Please help your child carefully check their backpacks and your home and cars. If it doesn’t turn up, please help your child check their desk, cubby, and classroom library. Tell them to talk to Mrs. Kahn and she will check the library shelves and see if it got put back on the shelf without being checked in by the computer. If the library book is indeed lost, then you can replace the book with another copy of the book (It must be the same binding as the lost book.) or you can pay a replacement fee; $20 for a hardback book or $10 for a paperback book. If you find the book within 30 days, then your money will be refunded. If it is longer than 30 days, then you may keep the book or donate it to the library. Unfortunately, your child cannot check out a book until the lost book is replaced or the replacement fee paid.
If your child’s damaged book can be repaired and continue to circulate to other students, then an apology and conversation about good book care is all that is necessary. If your child has damaged a book beyond repair, then the same 2 options are available to you, replace the book with another copy of the book with the same binding or pay the replacement fee. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Kahn at ekahn@moreland.orgor 408-874-3715.
Looking for a “Just Right” Book for Your Student?
Scholastic Book Expert Online lets you search by title, author, grade level, interest level and Lexile (check with your student’s teacher for their Lexile reading level). After they read the books, students can take a reading comprehension test in their classroom.

Payne Library Policies
August 2012
Dear Payne Families:
Students make weekly visits to the Payne library with their classes. Depending on their grade level, students may check out one or two books, and may keep them for one or two weeks. If your child needs more time to finish a book they may renew it at least once. Students must bring books to the library to renew.
